Today’s Tracks #7 – Northern soul and skipping

June 27, 2012

DIDN’T get to listen to much new music, but got a good hour in the gym skipping and doing circuits to the best Northern Soul playlist I have ever made.

Track 8 – Sandi Sheldon’s ‘You’re Going to Make Me Love You’, on the legendary soul label Okeh, is just a wee bit high tempo for a fat lad like me, but it takes me through to the end of a hard session skipping. I wish I had been young enough for Northern Soul at its height in Britain in the 1970s, but I know I wouldn’t have been hip enough.

Before I get to the high tempo of the Sandi Sheldon, Mel & Tim’s ‘Back Field in Motion’ is a glorious groove (white man talking street KLAXON). It’s what I think all soul should sound like in the perfect world. The B Side, ‘Do Right Baby’ (on this piece of YouTube) is just as good, if not better.
