Today’s Tracks #16 – Bill Withers and A Soldier’s Sad Story: Vietnam Through The Eyes Of Black America 1966-73

July 20, 2012

Bill Withers captured by Fin Costello. Used from the New Yorker. I’ll remove for copyright infringement if requested.

MY friend Tom Rafferty, ace guitarist with the mighty Glaswegian bands The Primevals and The Beat Poets, sent me this ridiculously great record A Soldier’s Sad Story: Vietnam Through The Eyes Of Black America 1966-73.

It was among a cache of several others he sent which celebrate the era of burgeoning black consciousness in post civil rights era America. I’ll write about the others in the coming days when I have a chance to listen to them fully.

I’m also going to buy them because the artists, or their families, need to be rewarded.

Among tracks by James Carr, Joe Tex, Mel & Tim, and William Bell, this Bill Withers tracks was the one that hit me today. Even above Curtis Mayfield’s Back to the World, and I normally always vote Curtis above everyone else.

EDIT: Jez Collins who commented below (@jezc on Twitter) suggested this brilliant version of the song by John Legend and The Roots. There is no song that can’t be improved on by simply having The Roots play on it.

The album is fantastic, you should also check out the John Legend/Roots: Wake Up album and their version of this, 11.48 long and utterly brilliant. The album is a tribute to some other black consciousness songs.
