Today’s Tracks #17 – Donny Hathaway, Camille Yarbrough, Oscar Brown

July 20, 2012

PART Two of the amazing albums gift by Tom Rafferty, this time, two magnificent collections of black American consciousness soul music.

The first Black & Proud: The Music of the Black Panther Era, Vol 1, is a brilliant summary of hard edged political music that encompasses black consciousness era. Stand out tracks come from the Last Poets, Melvin Van Peebles and Camille Yarbrough.

The second album is the brilliant Change is Gonna Come: The Voice of Black America 1963-1973, a round-up of the best of that era.Parliament, Ray Scott, The Temps, James Brown and a host of others feature.

My two stand-out tracks are the great Oscar Brown Jr’s spoken word ‘Forty Acres and a Mule’, and Donny Hathaway’s ‘Someday We’ll All Be Free’.

Donny Hathaway could sing the back of a cereal box and make it sound like the greatest thing you’d ever heard, a great loss to the world of music. When you look up soul singer in the dictionary, it says ‘see Donny Hathaway.’
